How a Spot Hogg slider carries its tape

Spot Hogg sliders move the pin housing along a vertical rail, and the yardage tape sits beside that rail with a pointer reading against it. Tape spacing therefore maps directly to elevation travel: the length of rail your setup uses between 20 and 60 yards decides how much room each yard gets.

The XL rails give long-range setups more travel and more resolution. They also make an error at the far mark cost more, because the fitted curve is stretched over a longer distance. Spot Hogg offers tapes built from sight-in marks; this tool takes the same input and adds a third mark to the fit.

What this calculator does instead

It fits the trajectory through two, three or more of your marks, prints at exact 1:1 scale, and sizes the tape to your data. If you would rather fill the rail with a fixed length, set it in the customization panel.

The tape label is preset to "Spot Hogg". The width defaults to 0.7 in and can be changed to match your rail.

Sighting in a Spot Hogg for a custom tape

Measure travel with a rule, not by eye. On a long rail small reading errors add up.

  1. Run the slider to the top of its travel and zero at 20 yards. That is travel 0.
  2. Slide to 60 yards, or your longest confident distance, sight in, and measure the pointer's travel from the 20 mark in inches.
  3. Add a 40 yard mark. On a long rail the third mark matters more than on a compact sight, because a two-point fit extrapolates further.
  4. Enter the marks, print, and verify the 1 in ruler before cutting.

Printing and fitting the tape

Print at 100% and verify the ruler. Trim to the rail, apply from the 20 yard end, and confirm at 40. On multi-pin models the fixed pins keep their own zero; the tape only serves the movable pin. Re-calibrate after a string, draw weight, or arrow change.

FAQ

My Fast Eddie XL has a long rail. Will the tape be long enough?
By default the tape fits your marks and the range you ask for. Set a fixed tape length in the customization panel to fill the rail. Yardages beyond your last calibration mark are marked as extrapolated.
Can I put field points and broadheads on one tape?
Only if they group together at your calibration distances. If they do not, calibrate separately and print two tapes. The sight tape guide covers how to decide.
Does this work with the multi-pin Hogg Father?
For the movable pin, yes. The fixed pins are set once each and do not use the tape.
