How HHA's numbered tapes work

HHA single-pin sights ship with a set of pre-printed yardage tapes, each one numbered, and a chart that picks one for you. The chart works from a two-distance sight-in: zero at 20 yards, sight in again at 60, read the dial position at each, and the chart names the tape whose spacing comes closest to that pair. It is quick, and it is usually close.

Two limits are built into that method. The tape is chosen from a fixed set, so a setup that falls between two numbers gets the nearer one. And the choice rests on two readings, so a measuring error at either mark can move you a whole tape.

What this calculator does instead

It fits a trajectory through the marks you give it, two at minimum and three or more for a quadratic fit, and prints that curve as a tape at exact 1:1 scale. Your 20 and 60 yard readings from the factory process work as they are: enter each mark as its distance and the dial travel in inches from your 20 yard zero.

The tape label is preset to "HHA Optimizer". The width defaults to 0.7 in and can be changed in the customization panel to match your slot.

Sighting in an HHA for a custom tape

The procedure is the factory one with a third mark added.

  1. Run the dial to its top reference and zero at 20 yards. That is travel 0.
  2. Walk back to 60 yards, or the longest distance you can shoot with confidence, sight in, and measure the travel from the 20 mark. Use the included setup tape with 1/8 in ticks if your sight has no readable scale.
  3. Add a 40 yard mark. The tool warns you when the three marks do not sit on a plausible curve, which usually means one mark was shot badly.
  4. Enter the marks, print, and check the 1 in ruler on the sheet before you cut.

Printing and fitting the tape

Print at 100%, never "fit to page", and verify the ruler. Trim to the slot width, apply from the 20 yard end, and shoot 40 yards before trusting the far end. Re-calibrate after a new string, a draw weight change, or any change to the arrow.

FAQ

Can I use a printed tape instead of the numbered HHA tapes?
Yes. The slot takes any tape of the right width. Print on plain paper or label stock and cover it with clear tape, or print on a clear label and stick it over a blank.
Which HHA tape number should I use?
This calculator does not pick a factory number. It prints a tape fitted to your marks. If you want the number as well, use HHA's chart with your 20 and 60 yard readings, then shoot at 40 to see which of the two agrees with your groups.
Do I need a chronograph?
No. The marks drive the fit. Arrow speed and weight only shape the curve beyond your last mark, where the tool flags yardages as extrapolated.
